About Us
Advanced Third Age Renewable Energies Company (ATAREC) is a Moroccan startup aiming to position itself as a leader in innovative third-generation renewable energy solutions and their applications, ensuring green energy autonomy for its partners. ATAREC is distinguished by its pilot wave energy solution, Wave Beat, patented in over 70 countries and proven at Tanger Med Port, ATAREC's first incubator.
After more than three years of relentless development, ATAREC continues to pave its way to contribute to limiting climate impacts and ensuring sustainable energy access through the emergence of the marine energy sector. This sector could cover all of humanity's energy needs if fully exploited, according to the International Energy Agency: 20,000 to 90,000 TWh/year compared to a global electricity consumption of about 16,000 TWh/year.
Wave energy is characterized by its continuity; waves never stop! This results in a smoothing effect of wind energy. Consequently, WAVE BEAT has demonstrated a capacity factor at Tanger Med surpassing offshore wind, approaching 60%. Moreover, WAVE BEAT, thanks to its amplification system and by leveraging the advantages of onshore while being offshore, has demonstrated a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) among the most competitive in the world for wave energy.
This exceptional potential of WAVE BEAT has enabled ATAREC to actively contribute to the emergence of marine energy, with agreements signed for wave energy projects in 5 countries, including its pilot at Tanger Med, the first wave energy exploitation project in Africa, with a projected total capacity of up to 110 MW.
ATAREC is the winner of more than 15 programs and competitions on a national, regional, and international scale.
ATAREC has gained trust throughout its journey from various national and international stakeholders, particularly Tanger Med as "the first incubator," and UM6P Ventures, the investment arm of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.
Our Journey
-
2019 Genesis of the Idea
The WAVE BEAT project was born from a mix of experience, culture, and context of two engineers: Oussama Nour, who worked with Tanger Med Port concessionaires and observed the growing need for decarbonized energy, and Mohamed Taha El Ouaryachi, who worked on port and maritime projects and recognized the immense energy potential of the sea.
From the very first day, the two founders of ATAREC knew that the challenge would not be easily attainable. However, they believed that by expanding the circle of trust and involving stakeholders aware of the current energy challenges and the value of green energy diversification, the project could emerge as a leading solution in the marine energy sector globally.
This motivation was supported from day one by key individuals, initially at Tanger Med and later across broader domains, including environmental, technical, and port sectors.
